Coventry Sphinx news round up

Preparations for the new season continue at the club and plenty has been happening since the last update. More new players have committed to the club, the pre season matches are in full swing now and the Midland League have issued the fixtures for the opening month of the season.

New signing Robbie Banks has been appointed captain by first team manager Luke Hopkins. Banks has previously captained Rugby Town and he has already shown great leadership in his short time at the club. I’m confident Robbie will represent the club well in the coming season.

Recently last seasons captain Ash Jackson has once again committed himself to the club which is great news for the club. Ash is a fully committed player who can play in defence or central midfield and is always dangerous from set pieces. Tom Bates has also signed forms for the club and adds a great deal of experience to the midfield. Tom has played the majority of his career at a higher level and strengthens the squad again.

Coventry Sphinx 3 Racing Club Warwick 0 – Thomson, Evangelinos, Trialist

Coventry Sphinx 1 Folly Lane 2                   – McBride

Coventry Sphinx 1 Chasetown 2                 – Piggon

Coventry Sphinx 4 Worcester City 0            – Thomson (3), Piggon

Two wins and two defeats so far in the pre season matches but the performances have been very promising indeed. The first two matches saw a lot of players used with a mix of first teamers, trialists and youth players. The main focus of the first two matches were fitness and assessing players as you would expect. Pre season “proper” started with the visit of Chasetown who play in the division above Sphinx. A strong line up was named by manager Luke Hopkins and the performance was excellent despite the result. Once again a strong line up was named for the Worcester game and the result reflected the performance this time as Worcester were soundly beaten 4-0.

Next up is the visit of Barwell on Friday (7.30pm kick off) and the Northern Premier League side are sure to provide strong opposition. We have further matches against Cadbury Athletic (Sphinx Drive, Monday 27th July, 7.45pm) and Coventry Copsewood (Allard Way, Saturday, 1st August) to complete our preparations for the start of the league season on the 8th August.

The long anticipated August fixtures have been issued by the Midland Football League and the remaining fixtures for the season are expected to be announced shortly.

Saturday 8th August Away – Long Eaton United

Monday 10th August HOME – Quorn

Saturday 15th August Away – Lye Town (FA Cup)

Saturday 22nd August HOME – Boldmere St Michaels

Tuesday 25th August Away – Shepshed Dynamo

Monday 31st August HOME – Bardon Hill

An interesting start for Coventry Sphinx and the new season can’t start quickly enough now!

After the Worcester match Chairman Dannie Cahill organised a get together in the lounge at the Sphinx Sports and Social club where the players were informally introduced to all the volunteers and supporters of Coventry Sphinx. Club President Dave Bennett was there to say a few words and manager Luke Hopkins introduced all the volunteers and their roles to the players. Luke pointed out there were a few characters around the club and for some reason all eyes diverted to a certain Phil Rooney in the corner of the room! The Chairman then made a short but passionate speech to urge us all to support each other whether you are a player, coach, volunteer or supporter. A great idea to do this and he was very clear on his ambitions for the club for this season and beyond.
