Football is back! On Tuesday 7th July at 6.30pm, Coventry Sphinx will kick off their first pre season friendly of the 2015/16 season. The visitors to Sphinx Drive will be Racing Club Warwick who will be making the short journey up to Coventry for the match.
Racing Club Warwick play in the division below Coventry Sphinx and last season they finished in 18th place in the Midland Football League Division 1. Coventry Sphinx themselves finished in 18th place in the MFL Premier Division in what was a disappointing campaign overall. Manager Luke Hopkins is clearly expecting to rectify that as he initially brought in Craig Herbert to his management team. Craig has a wealth of experience in the professional and non league game and his influence has been apparent with a number of players following him from Rugby Town where he was assistant manager. The new players have settled in well during pre season training and it’s been apparent they have come from a higher level. The retention of the likes of centre back Matt Taylor and young midfielders Luke Downes and Jackson Downie combined with the influx of new players that are experience at a higher level gives us great cause for optimism. There is a notable buzz around the club as we prepare for the new season but we are in no doubt how competitive this division will be.
Tuesday nights match is the managers first opportunity to give his squad some game time so it will be no surprise if the whole squad is utilised. I’m sure the squad building is not complete so don’t be surprised if you see an unfamiliar face in a Sphinx shirt! The main pitch is looking good but in order to get it into prime condition the Racing Club Warwick match will take place on the second pitch behind the main stand. Entrance is FREE for all spectators and there is a car park with a clubhouse on site that will be open for refreshments. There has been plenty of work happening off the pitch during the close season and the first thing you will notice is the addition of new signs including a large one on the entrance gate proudly displaying our club crest.
There are plenty of reasons to attend the match on Tuesday including:
– An opportunity to take a look at the new players
– Friendly clubhouse with bar
– View the new club crests adorning the site
– It’s FREE ENTRANCE FOR ALL!
