Coventry Sphinx weekly round up

On Friday June 5th Coventry Sphinx Sports and Social Club hosted the annual Junior’s Presentation evening. It was a great success as all the Junior Team’s players, managers, coaches and families joined club officials and volunteers to celebrate the achievements of our future stars. To top the evening off we were honoured by the presence of Coventry City 1987 FA Cup winner Dave Bennett who was on hand to present all of the nights awards. The club was packed to the rafters and was a clear demonstration of how many people have a connection with the club.

Coventry Sphinx will be holding a trials event for next season’s Youth Team at The Alan Higgs Centre, Allard Way, Coventry, CV3 1HW on June 20th from 10am. The Coventry Sphinx Youth team had a highly successful season with two trophies added to the cabinet at Sphinx Drive. They won the Eastern Midland Floodlit League title and won the BCFA Youth Cup as well. There is a clear pathway through to the first team at Coventry Sphinx and the success of the Youth team last season shows the club are doing things the right way. If you are interested in joining Coventry’s Premier Non League club then contact Manager Stuart Fraser at including Name, Age, current and previous clubs and preferred position.

Coventry Sphinx are currently undergoing a drive to increase sponsorship and advertising revenues and are always happy to talk to anyone who feels they would like to be associated with a thriving community club in Coventry. All sorts of options are available including Pitch-side advertising boards, Match Ball sponsors, shirt sponsorships and player sponsorship. There is bound to be an option to suit your needs so feel free to contact the club by email at the following address:

After years of service to the club, Jackie McGowan has decided to step down as Club Secretary. Her knowledge, experience and friendly face will be missed around the club. Match Day secretary Sharon Taylor has agreed to step up into the role of Club Secretary and I have full confidence in her abilities to represent the club.

Coventry Sphinx play in the Midland Football League Premier Division (step 5 of the non league pyramid) and also play in the FA Vase and FA Cup. Preparations have already begun for the new season with some adjustments in the management structure of the first team. The popular and much respected Stuart Dutton returns to Coventry Copsewood to take up a role as Joint Manager and I for one will look forward to seeing him in his new role. Arriving at Coventry Sphinx as Assistant Manager to Luke Hopkins is Craig Herbert. Craig is still relatively young but brings a wealth of experience to the club having played professional football most notably at West Bromwich Albion and also spent many years at Rugby Town as a player and as an assistant manager.

The management team have already been busy building their squad for what they hope will be a successful season. Firstly, news of a departure as left sided player Gio Dainty has decided to join Coleshill Town for next season. He was almost ever present for the club last season and I’m sure he will be missed.

Manager Luke Hopkins has been largely successful with retaining his best players from last season though as a number of them have already committed to the club for next season. They include goalkeeper Carl O’Neill who is a key player in the side. “Carlo” has made over 250 appearances for the club, was last seasons Players Player of the Year and you will do well to find a better keeper than him at this level. Last season’s Player of the Year Matt Taylor is also expected to take his place at Centre Back. Three young stars by the names of Jack Rooney (Young Player of the Year), Luke Downes (Top Goalscorer) and Jackson Downie (Most Improved Player of the Year) have all committed to the club and crucially have all agreed to become the club’s first ever contracted players. Great news for the club, supporters and the players themselves.

The management team of Luke Hopkins and Craig Herbert have pulled off some excellent recruitment so far as three new players have already agreed to join the club. All three will come to the club from Rugby Town and will bring ability and experience of a higher level of football to the club. Robbie Banks is a midfielder, a leader and will bring great qualities to this young side. Richard Blythe is another centre midfielder who is in his early twenties and featured in the Aston Villa Youth Team as well as being a former Welsh Under 19 international. Mitch Piggon is a Centre Forward in his mid twenties who is proven at a higher level. Again, he is sure to improve the side as we go into next season.
